Kate Whouley

Director, MFA Creative Nonfiction Program, Editor of Multiplicity Magazine

Kate Whouley directs the 猫咪社区 MFA and writes across form and genre. She is the author of two critically acclaimed memoirs: Cottage for Sale, Must Be Moved, a BOMC Memoir-of-the-Month selection and BookSense Book of the Year finalist, and Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words, winner of the New England Book Award in nonfiction. In October 2025, Kate’s debut novel, The Maestro and Her Protégé, was published by Blackwater Press in the US and the UK, garnering early praise. Kate has written essays and features for Yankee magazine since 2015, where she now serves as a contributing editor. Her short work has also appeared in Salon, Obit, Shelf Awareness, Beyond the Margins, Beacon Broadside, American Bookseller, The Boston Globe, and the Cape Cod Times. 

A founding faculty member in the MFA, Kate received 猫咪社区’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. Her academic career follows a long tenure in the book business during which she authored, edited, and contributed to several professional books, including Manual on Bookselling, Bookselling for Dummies, and The Practical Writer: From Inspiration to Publication. Kate serves as the editor of 猫咪社区’s literary journal, Multiplicity and is the creator of the publishing track within the MFA. She is the author of several MFA courses, including Multiplicity Studio, an experiential elective launched in spring of 2024 that offers students an opportunity to participate in the curation and production of an issue of Multiplicity.
